What's a wooden fish?

The design of this Wooden Fish Whale combines the buddhist traditional with modern aesthetics. Wooden Fish is a percussion instrument used in Buddhist ceremonies in China. It's played by striking it with a wooden mallet, and produces a distinctive, resonant sound. The rhythmic sound is meant to promote mindfulness and concentration during spiritual practices. In photo: Mu Yu collected by Met Museum, NYC
